The Disappearing Spoon masterfully fuses science with the classic lore of invention, investigation, and discovery - from the Big Bang through the end of time. These fascinating tales follow every element on the table as they play out their parts in human history, and in the lives of the (frequently) mad scientists who discovered them. Why did Gandhi hate iodine (I, 53)? How did radium (Ra, 88) nearly ruin Marie Curies reputation? And why is gallium (Ga, 31) the go-to element for laboratory pranksters? The Periodic Table is a crowning scientific achievement, but its also a treasure trove of adventure, betrayal, and obsession. Part philosophy of imagination, part political theory, and part pedagogical critique, this book is a twenty-first century bestiary-a catalog to navigate the monstrous world in which we live. Their cultural studies experiments both extend and challenge the critical theories of Michael Hardt and Antonio Negri, Giorgio Agamben, Paulo Freire, and others concerned with questions of teaching and learning beyond the global cultural logic of capitalism. Through a unique combination of critical, posthumanist, and educational theories, the authors engage in a surreal journey into how social movements are renegotiating the boundaries of community through expressions of posthuman love. In Education Out of Bounds, Lewis and Kahn argue for a new critical theory of the monster as an imaginary "other" on the margins of the human and the animal. It's Monday! For example, the thought that went into why he made Persephone a little dark in this story is so thought provoking.Īlso, as I've said in my reviews of Zeus and Athena, I love the G(r)eek notes, drawings, bibliography, recommended reading, discussion questions and author's notes at the end of all of his graphic novels- they make them accessible for not only children & teens, but teachers to use in their classroom. The way that O'Connor takes the myth, stays true to it, but adds his own interpretation of aspects is what makes his graphic novels unique. I am such a fan of George O'Connor's style of art and his storytelling capabilities as I've loved the two other Olympian graphic novels that I've read and I love this one as well. And saying that, this graphic novel is by far my favorite version of the story. I love how clever the Greeks were to have such an elaborate tale to account for the seasons that we all experience. What I Think: Persephone's myth is one of my favorites. Now, today's guest is the legendary Ronald Kelly. We chat with masters of horror, about writing, life lessons, creativity, and much more. The first book in the word✔of✔mouth phenomenon debut fantasy series about one man's dangerous journey through a labyrinthine world. One of my favorite books of all time (Mark Lawrence)The Tower of Babel is the greatest marvel in the world. Despite my frustration with the detective work, I enjoyed Viv and her interactions with a local photographer and the first woman on the Fell police force. The mystery of the murdered and missing women is resolved rather unsatisfactorily – it involves some pretty big assumptions and then a lot of stalking this wasn’t the most compelling part of the novel for me. Both women observe potential supernatural events at the motel (paralleled in the narrative), which may be actual experiences or may be cognitive impairment from working on the night shift. Carly, who is cast adrift when her mother, Viv’s sister, dies, comes to Fell, NY, to try to unravel the mystery of her aunt’s disappearance. Viv is drawn into investigating a mystery involving several missing and murdered women because of eerie encounters at the motel. James, sat on my shelf for at least a week before I peeked at it, but once I peeked, I was hooked! The plot follows two women, one a night clerk at the Sun Down Motel in 1982 and the other the current night clerk, and switches between stories and timelines.Ĭarly, the current clerk, is the niece of Viv, who vanished while working in 1982. While I’ve been lurking and getting book ideas, I have had a terrible time focusing enough to write up any of the (few) books I’ve actually managed to finish – I blame the pandemic. Have you ever been chill or game? Do you rock or rule? If so, then you’re tapped into the ethics of awesomeness. But don’t miss its profound ambition, which is to show how philosophy unearths the structure of ordinary language, defines the meaning of life in routine business, and poses the question of how best to live.
